Would you rather be portrayed as you really look or as you would like to appear? Although they were familiar with the idealized portraits of classical Greece, early Romans rejected them. Both were vital to constructing monumental public buldings that remain enduring aspects of Rome’s legacy. A dome is a hemispheric vault that usually rests on a cylindrical wall called a drum. Using concrete, Roman architects could build domes that surpassed Mycenaean tombs. The corbelled Treasury of Atreus at Mycenae was the largest domed space in the ancient world. A groin vault is formed by the right angle intersection of two equal-sized barrel vaults. A row of round arches produces a barrel or tunnel vault. A true arch is constructed with wedge-shaped bricks or stones called voussoirs. Concrete enabled architects to build arches and to cover large spaces with barrel vaults, groin vaults and domes. Unlike marble, concrete does not have to be quarried, cut or transported. Concrete was easy to use, strong and cheap. Builders learned to pour this mixture into a wooden mold, where it dried and became as hard as stone. Roman concrete was made from a mixture of lime mortar, volcanic sand, water and small stones. The engaged Ionic columns do not actually provide support because the cella is a solid wall made of concrete.ħ Concrete Revolution The discovery of concrete revolutionized Roman architecture. Much like the Temple of Athena Nike, freestanding Ionic half- columns on the sides and back of the cella. temples, the Temple of Portunus sits atop a high podium accessible only at the front. Constructed around 75BCE, the temple combines Etruscan and Greek elements to create a distinctive Roman design. And, finally, Roman works of art can often be used as illustrative examples for one or both of the long essay questions.ĥ The Temple of Portunus The Temple of Portunus provides a good example of an early Roman temple. Between 20, each exam included either a slide- based multiple-choice question or a short essay. In addition, a slide-based multiple-choice question or a short essay question has been included on two of every three exams since The emphasis on Roman art has been especially strong since 2001. Most exams contain between four and six multiple choice questions. The AP Art History exam reflects this importance by placing significant emphasis on Roman art, sculpture, and architecture. Like Greece, Rome had a lasting influence on the Western tradition of art. Temples, amphitheaters, and aqueducts were all visual expressions of the power and benefits of Roman civilization.ģ Exam Strategy… The rise and fall of Roman civilization is one of the most significant chapters in art history texts. The Romans used art and architecture to help unify their empire. The Romans conquered a vast empire that extended north to Scotland, south to the Sahara Desert, east to Mesopotamia, and west to the Atlantic Ocean. The Pantheon inspired Monticello, the Colosseum inspired the Superdome, and Roman aqueducts inspired the one in California. What do Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello, the New Orleans Superdome, and the California Aqueduct have in common? All three structures are modern descendants of edifices first built by the Romans. Desire to revive elements is focused on the columns, marbles, not details.Presentation on theme: "Highlights of ROMAN ART"- Presentation transcript:Ģ Introduction and Exam Strategy Overview The eye is encouraged to move upward and stops. The two at the top are attached to an arch. Not really Roman though because used two levels of arches. They attempted to recreate Roman buildings. The gallery has another set of arches and a celestory with windows. Although Byzantine, this is good enough for them to call it Roman. They took Roman remains and brought this here. The design is deliberately based on a church like this and imported materials from Italy. *Compare to San Vitale which has the dome in the middle. Has two stories with an ambulatory and a gallery. Super Endurance Foldable Quadcopter Drone for Beginners Its flight control system enables stable flight and precise flight maneuvers such as flips, rolls, and race course moves. In a nutshell, there are 4 main components in an FPV system: FPV Camera Video Transmitter(VTX) FPV Goggles(with Video Receiver) Antennas There is a camera connected to a VTX, and the VTX broadcasts the video feed wirelessly to a VRX which is either built into the FPV goggles, or added to them as an external moduleĪ great way to learn how to fly a FPV drone is to use a drone simulator. Pilots can choose from three flight modes to help them become accustomed to the controls, while features such as altitude hold and self-protection make it harder to lose or crash the drone.įlight Controller The flight controller acts as the brain of any drone, featuring a range of sensors for detecting the drone's movement, as well as the user's commands. Most beginner drones have small sensors that struggle in high-contrast situations, but we fly them through a variety of lighting conditions to see where their breaking point is and in what conditions you can realistically expect usable footage. The stuff we've gone over is all you need to fly, but before you can head out to fly again, you'll need a good Charger that's capable of recharging your LiPo batteries. With so many different products on the market, how do you know which one is right for you? In this article, we'll take a look at the top 5 FPV drone kits for beginners and go over their main features and considerations when selecting a model. Drone kits offer complete packages that come with everything needed to build a racing drone or film stunning video footage.įor beginners just starting out, it can be overwhelming trying to find the right FPV drone kit. This is one of the many things that suck about being injured and why you should do everything you can to make sure it doesn’t happen. They might even potentially end up with better overall results in general, since more than just biceps training could be affected. Which means indirectly, the healthy people from the EZ curl bar group could potentially end up with better biceps results than the injured people from the straight bar group. In which case it’s more likely that the straight bar group would have had to make some “oh-no-I-have-an-injury” style changes to their workout over this period of time (like reducing the amount of weight being lifted, completely avoiding affected exercises like curls, rows, pull-ups/pull-downs in the short term or long term, taking time off to let things heal, etc.). So using that same imaginary group of 100 people from a minute ago, I DO think you’ll see that more of the group who did straight bar curls would end up developing some form of wrist, forearm and/or elbow injury at some point than the group who did all of their curls with an EZ curl bar. Meaning, is the difference in safety and injury prevention more significant than the difference in biceps activation? In fact, I truly doubt you’d see any meaningful difference whatsoever. If we then monitored everything over some long period of time (years) and compared their results afterwards, I really don’t think you’d see much in the way of a noticeable difference in terms of biceps growth and overall size. So let’s say we magically created 100 people who are the same height, weight and age with the same genetics and body type, and put them on the same intelligently designed diet and workout program with the sole difference being that 50 of them only did biceps curls with a straight bar, and the other 50 only did biceps curls with an EZ curl bar. Meaning, is the difference in biceps activation more significant than the difference in safety and injury prevention? So basically, one exercise might hit your biceps slightly more but increase your risk of injury, and the other might hit your biceps slightly less but decrease your risk of injury.Īnd that brings us to the next question that needs answering… Which Difference Is More Significant? That slight angle of the EZ curl bar will put your wrists, forearms and elbows in a more comfortable, natural and safe position, thus reducing the risk of common injuries that many people develop over time from curling with a straight bar (most commonly medial epicondylitis aka golfer’s elbow aka pain at the inner part of your elbow aka a super annoying injury I’ve personally dealt with in the past aka a nice way for me to overuse ‘aka’).With the EZ curl bar, you’re in more of a semi-supinated position between supinated (palms up) and neutral (palms facing each other) which likely brings the brachioradialis into the movement a tiny bit more (and thus the biceps a tiny bit less).Doing barbell curls with a straight bar will likely provide better biceps activation to some extent since you’re curling in full supination (palms facing up).The person who asked this question kinda has it right: Now let’s answer the question… EZ Curl Bar vs Straight Barbell: PROS And CONS For the 12 people who have never seen one before, this is an EZ curl bar. We’re all clear on that? Potential misunderstandings prevented? Cool. For this reason, I highly recommend that everyone trying to build muscle (with the possible exception of beginners) put a smaller, secondary focus on direct arm isolation work like triceps extensions and biceps curls. However, as I also mentioned in that same triceps guide, compounds alone will not produce the best results possible in terms of building muscular arms. Which do you recommend and why?ĪNSWER: Just to make sure we’re all on the same page, let me start this answer off with what I like to call a quick “misunderstanding-preventer.”Īs I mentioned in my triceps guide a couple of weeks ago, the majority of your biceps/triceps growth will come as a result of getting stronger at compound exercises like various chest presses, shoulder presses, rows and pull-ups/lat pull-downs, which is why this type of stuff should always get your primary focus. QUESTION: Do you think it’s better to do biceps curls using the EZ curl bar or the regular straight bar? I’ve heard people say the straight bar hits your biceps a lot better but the EZ curl bar is safer for your wrists and elbows. On a 21mm rim: lower pressure by 0.3bar / 5psi On a 19mm rim: lower pressure by 0.4bar / 6psi If you have a set of wheels with hookless rims, the maximum permitted tyre pressure may also be much lower than with hooked rims. These are typically printed on the tyre or rim sidewalls. Likewise, the optimum tyre pressure will be higher for heavier riders, or for riders carrying loads on their bikes, and lower for lighter riders.Īs a final caveat, it’s important to adhere to the pressure limitations set by the manufacturers of both your rims and tyres, particularly with regards to the upper limits. If the actual inflated tyre width is larger than the labelled width, the tyre will need slightly less pressure than recommended by these tables and vice versa. Helpfully, some tyre manufacturers offer pressure recommendations or pressure calculators for their range of road bike tyres, and we can take these as general starting points for dry days on smooth tarmac.Īs we’ll come on to, you should pay close attention to the actual size of your tyres when inflated because this can change optimum pressure for any given rim and tyre combination. Tools for the jobīikeRadar’s technical writer, Simon von Bromley, puts around 65psi in his 28mm tyres. Getting your tyre pressure right is both faster and more comfortable. Once you go past a certain point, adding more air to your tyres actually decreases grip, increases high-frequency vibrations and causes extra muscular fatigue. Very high tyre pressures might feel fast, but they’re not. If your tyre pressure is too high, the tyre will be so stiff your bike will begin to vibrate over imperfections in the road surface, negatively affecting comfort and wasting energy. It also increases the chance of pinch flat punctures. If your tyre pressure is too low, more energy will be lost in the deformation of the tyre casing and friction between the tyre and the road. Rolling resistance is the force resisting the motion of your tyres rolling on the ground. On a basic level, getting your tyre pressure right will make your rides easier, more comfortable and lower your chances of punctures.įrom a performance standpoint, optimising tyre pressure is critical to reducing rolling resistance and improving comfort. If your tyre pressure is too low, you could pinch the tyre against the rim, causing a puncture or damaging the wheel. Key points to considerīefore we get stuck into the details, here are four key things to consider when it comes to road bike tyre pressure. We’ve also got a guide to tubeless setup, if you’re considering making the switch, and buyer’s guides to the best road bike tyres and best tubeless tyres if you’re looking for new rubber. If you’re just starting out, we’ve also got an explainer on how to pump up a bike tyre, as well as a guide to inner tubes, with everything you need to know about tube sizes, valve types, materials and so on. In this article, we’ll run through why tyre pressure is so important, what factors influence finding your optimum pressure, and how you can find a pressure that works best for you. But you also need it low enough to absorb, rather than bounce over, imperfections in the road. You need your tyre pressure high enough to minimise energy losses from the deformation of the tyre and to offer predictable handling through corners. So, how can you find the right tyre pressure for your bike? In essence, it’s all about finding a balance. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re an experienced rider looking to optimise performance, we’re here to help. Don’t be lazy like me, take the time to really drain your Rotel. As you can see in this picture, I could have done a better job of draining the Rotel. Then I added in a can of drained Rotel and some sour cream. Next, I added two cans of drained rinse black beans, cilantro, cheese, salt, cumin, lime juice, garlic powder, and a little cayenne powder. I like to chop up the jalapenos first so that all the pieces are nice and small. I didn’t take much time draining the can of Rotel, next time I’ll really squish the liquid out of the Rotel.įirst I seeded the jalapenos and threw them in my food processor with the garlic cloves. I’m not sure though because the black bean dip tastes amazing as is. The recipe didn’t turn out very thick, which isn’t a bad thing, I think next time I make it I may substitute the sour cream for cream cheese. If you don’t care for cilantro, then leave it out. I only had two on hand, but when I make this recipe again, I will probably use three or four jalapenos. If you like your food spicy, you could easily add another seeded jalapeno. This black bean dip is very similar to something my local Mexican restaurant serves with chips and salsa. I felt like cooking something different and was looking around for what I had on hand, and this recipe is the result. I made this recipe as a snack for my husband and four kids (25, 19, 18, & 15). Another option would be to transfer the black bean dip to a small slow cooker and warm it for a few hours. Throw ingredients into a food processor or blender, pour into a pie plate, or oven-safe bowl, top with cheese, and warm it up 350 degrees in the oven for 20-25 minutes. This is an easy spicy black bean dip recipe. The direct sunshine created a double rainbow. Water crashed into the rock 300 feet below and formed a big cloud of mist. The view straight down the fall was dizzying. I tested the railing at the edge of the cliff to make sure it was sturdy and secure before I braced myself and leaned over the edge for a better view. Suddenly, the water disappears over the edge. The current was swift but calm with little white caps as it bends around the protruding rocks. What a welcome sight! The view from the top was powerful. Once we reached the top of Vernal Fall, there was a nice flat rock formation with full sun. Drying Out and Avoid the Crowd Top of Vernal Falls My hoodie was wet, my hat drenched, but my camera stayed dry. After what seemed like an eternity, we finally got past the mist area as the trail curved away from the fall. I walked as fast as I could, but had to stop often to catch my breath and to let people coming down to pass. We didn’t have rain gear and certainly did not expect to be drenched, but heck, how bad can it be? Keeping my camera dry was more important than keeping myself dry at this point so I hid my camera under my hoodie as best as I could, put my hood up with my hat on top, and braved the mist. Mist Challenge Soaked on the Mist Trail on a sunny day The leader told them to stay single file to the right, and keep going until there was no mist. When they stopped to put on their rain ponchos, we knew we were ill prepared. We followed a group of middle school kids up the steep trail. The ascent from the footbridge was significantly steeper. The water flow was massive, angry and powerful and it chiseled away at the rocks to continue the process of carving a deeper valley. The view of the fall from the footbridge was very pretty. Vernal Falls came into view and we could hear it from a distance away, roaring. People were friendly and in a festive mood viewing the water falls. We saw mostly “national park” people at this early time, but the trail was crowded. The ascent to the footbridge gave us pretty scenery and a view of two falls on the way up. We then drove to Vernal Falls trail head parking area and hiked the Mist trail. The last part of the trail was flooded and impassable so we could not get to the end but I clearly felt the power of the water fall thundering down and splashed off of the rocks at the bottom. The short trail led us to the bottom of the falls with the cold mist blowing. Since we did not stay in the park, we got an early start and reached Bridalveil Falls before 8:30 am to beat the crowd. We knew there would be lot of people in the park the next day. I am going to try mixing marble dust with polymer emulsion to make my own modeling paste that may be cheaper than buying it premixed. I love the look of it but it can take a few days to dry-and I am impatient. The second painting I did is with light modeling paste. It seems the thicker I put in on the better it was-the thinner applications didn’t seem to have as much support. + open your gallon of spackle and mix until blended. you dont want to use an easel for this project. + lay your drop cloth out on the floor, and place your canvas on top. In medieval and Renaissance times, gesso (usually made of plaster of paris mixed with glue) was applied to wood panels, plaster, stone, or canvas to provide the ground for tempera and oil painting. I am concerned that the plaster will crack eventually on the canvas. I am not sure of how it would do on canvas, but you can do a relieve piece is the plaster of paris, and then paint it. WHAT TO DO: + if you are painting an old canvas or doing a DIY thrift store flip, make sure to paint it white at least 24hrs prior to starting this project. It is great in that it dries quickly but you have to work fast and in only small sections. I do agree with everyone when they say plaster isn’t the best to use. Attached in a painting in which I used it-but I haven’t painted it yet. They do have a hobby and craft plaster of paris-but I have only used the regular one. You can get this in the craft section at Wal-Mart or even at the hardware store. I took a look at her paintings and it appears she may be using plaster of paris. I usually hang out in the drawing or portrait section but have recently discovered mixed media painting and love it. The textures built up beforehand all to often seem to me to be nothing but a texture for the sake of texture… or worse yet… they may actually conflict with the image in a distracting manner. To me, the rich impastos of an oil painting record the artist’s working process and tend to convey a sort of internal logic related to the overall image. All plaster of paris canvas prints ship within 48 hours and include a 30-day. Personally… as an aside… I’ve never been thrilled with the sort of thick texture applied prior to painting. Choose your favorite plaster of paris canvas prints from 67 available designs. Even on wood panel and at this small scale the plaster is very fragile and could easily be damaged were the piece to be dropped. As Rose Queen suggested I would be very wary of using plaster on canvas. I had to try it We had a scabby old dresser that didnt owe us anything. The individual pieces of wood (as well as the frame) were surfaced with plaster and then treated with a variety of paint, encaustic, shellac as well as sanding and rebuilding up. I might note that my own recent work employs the use of plaster: He constructed his paintings on wood panels which were surfaced with a shallow layer of plaster. I went to art school with an artist of Italian decent who was greatly inspired by the look of old Italian frescoes. in lieu of plaster for the texture.Įither that… or I’d utilize the plaster on a well-cradled (to avoid expansion/contraction) panel. I would think it would be better to use one of the many gel mediums, modeling paste, etc. Squeeze a dollop of acrylic paint onto a piece of cardboard to use as a palette, and finally, let your artistic self shine.Personally, I would be reluctant to use plaster on a canvas because canvas flexes and plaster doesn’t. Once the plaster changes from pink to white, it’s time to paint! The plaster doesn’t have to be totally white for you to start painting. Once you’re satisfied with the arrangement, let the canvas dry. Simply scrape over it with the spatula and begin again. In this video, I will show you how I create the plaster of paris embellishments I use for my mixed media canvas art. If you’re not a fan of your design, no worries. Plaster Canvas Art One of the things I love about this type of wall art is that it works with such a wide variety of home decorating styles.
