Both were vital to constructing monumental public buldings that remain enduring aspects of Rome’s legacy. A dome is a hemispheric vault that usually rests on a cylindrical wall called a drum. Using concrete, Roman architects could build domes that surpassed Mycenaean tombs. The corbelled Treasury of Atreus at Mycenae was the largest domed space in the ancient world. A groin vault is formed by the right angle intersection of two equal-sized barrel vaults. A row of round arches produces a barrel or tunnel vault. ![]() A true arch is constructed with wedge-shaped bricks or stones called voussoirs. Concrete enabled architects to build arches and to cover large spaces with barrel vaults, groin vaults and domes. Unlike marble, concrete does not have to be quarried, cut or transported. Concrete was easy to use, strong and cheap. Builders learned to pour this mixture into a wooden mold, where it dried and became as hard as stone. Roman concrete was made from a mixture of lime mortar, volcanic sand, water and small stones. The gallery has another set of arches and a celestory with windows. Although Byzantine, this is good enough for them to call it Roman. They took Roman remains and brought this here. The design is deliberately based on a church like this and imported materials from Italy. ![]() *Compare to San Vitale which has the dome in the middle. Has two stories with an ambulatory and a gallery. The building is modest is modest in size. There are also two towers called the WESTWORK. The arch and stairs form a formal approach. There are 2 great staircases to show this. On the west side of the chapel shows this is something belonging to the emperor. Odo, the bishop, got to build the chapel because he was smart. In the middle ages, the church was a learning place. This was for Charles own use for a palace.
